Hyundai Motor India is scheduled to launch the Bayon in the country on Monday, 26 October, when official ex-showroom prices are expected. The company has already shown the India-spec model and disclosed its engine and key technology. Bookings are open on Hyundai’s website and at dealerships for a token amount of Rs 11,000.

The Bayon will sit between the sub-four-metre Venue and the mid-size Creta in Hyundai’s line-up, Carlelo reported. Hyundai calls it an “Intelligent Utility Vehicle”. At the time of writing, the company had not published the price list.

Engine and gearboxes

Hyundai has confirmed a single powertrain for now: a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated MPi petrol engine. According to Machine Maker and Team-BHP, it makes about 115 PS and 144 Nm. Carlelo said it is the same engine used in the Creta.

Buyers can choose a six-speed manual or an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) automatic. Machine Maker reported that IVT versions get paddle shifters and a Dash Boost mode for quicker overtaking. All versions get Eco, Normal and Sport drive modes. Hyundai says more than six lakh vehicles with this engine have been sold in India since 2020.

Carlelo and CarWale have reported that a factory-fitted CNG version could follow later. Hyundai has not confirmed it.

Technology and features

Hyundai is pitching the Bayon as a tech-heavy product. According to Team-BHP, it gets a generative AI voice assistant built with Perplexity and SoundHound AI. It also has a connected-car navigation cockpit using NVIDIA technology, with split-screen navigation and user profiles. The cabin has a dual curved panoramic display for the instrument cluster and infotainment.

Up to 19 controllers can receive over-the-air updates. More than 500 voice commands work offline in several languages, and the Bluelink connected-car suite is included.

Carlelo reported several other features: a length of about 4.24 metres, a 411-litre boot, ventilated front seats, a powered driver’s seat, a panoramic sunroof, an eight-speaker Bose sound system and 17-inch alloy wheels. For safety, it listed six airbags, electronic stability control, a 360-degree camera and Level 2 ADAS, including adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking.

Expected price and rivals

Hyundai has not announced official prices yet. Industry estimates differ. Carlelo expects prices to start at around Rs 9.5 lakh for the base HX2 trim and go up to about Rs 15.5 lakh for the top HX10 automatic. CarWale’s tentative range is Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 16.69 lakh (ex-showroom). Readers should treat these figures as estimates until Hyundai publishes its list.

Carlelo reported that deliveries are expected to begin in the first week of November, around Diwali. Hyundai has not formally confirmed this.

On size and price, the Bayon will compete with the Maruti Suzuki Victoris, Honda Elevate and Renault Duster, Carlelo said. CarWale also lists sub-four-metre SUVs such as the Kia Syros, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Maruti Brezza and Kia Sonet as cars shoppers may compare it with.
