A strong earthquake shook central Japan in the early hours of Sunday, but the government said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The quake hit at about 1:04 am local time with its epicentre in the western part of Shizuoka Prefecture, according to Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. A post shared with her statement put the magnitude at 5.7 and the depth at about 40 km.

The heaviest shaking was felt next door in Aichi Prefecture, where Chita City recorded “upper 5” on Japan’s seven-level seismic intensity scale.

Takaichi said on X that there was no tsunami risk. She said the government had immediately set up a liaison office at the Crisis Management Centre in the Prime Minister’s Office and had been told to assess the damage and keep the public accurately informed.

She also asked people in the worst-hit areas to stay alert, warning that another quake of similar strength could follow.

Japan sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” and records frequent tremors. Details of any injuries or damage from Sunday’s quake had not been confirmed in the agency report at the time of writing.
