Counting of votes for graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies of the Legislative Councils in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra and Karnataka ran into a second day on Wednesday, 28 October. The paper-ballot count, which began on the morning of 27 October after polling on 23 October, has produced a clean sweep for the BJP-JD(S) alliance in Karnataka and an early edge for the BJP in Uttar Pradesh, while preferential-vote counting kept several seats in Bihar and Maharashtra open.

Uttar Pradesh: BJP four, SP one so far

Eleven seats, five graduates’ and six teachers’, went to the polls with 152 candidates in the fray. According to results reported by india.com, Organiser and Dynamite News, the BJP has won four:

  • Meerut Teachers’: Shrichand Sharma beat SP’s Nitin Tomar by 13,241 votes.
  • Meerut Graduates’: Dinesh Goyal won by 12,855 votes as per india.com and NewsX; Organiser put the margin at 12,688.
  • Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers’: Dr Hari Singh Dhillon polled 21,672 votes against SP’s Haji Danish Akhtar’s 3,996.
  • Lucknow Teachers’: Umesh Dwivedi retained the seat for a third straight term.

The Samajwadi Party’s Lal Bihari Yadav kept the Varanasi Teachers’ seat, which falls in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Lok Sabha constituency, defeating BJP’s Dr Pramod Mishra by 5,015 votes after second-preference transfers, Dynamite News reported.

The SP was ahead in Agra Teachers’, where Aakash Agarwal led BJP’s Hari Kishore Tiwari by 3,698 votes during second-preference counting, and in Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’, where Dr Man Singh Yadav led by 15,257 votes after six rounds. Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ was a see-saw between BJP’s Dhruv Tripathi and independent Rajiv Yadav, with leads of barely a few hundred votes changing hands. Agra Graduates’ was in early rounds, and the sources reviewed carried no confirmed result for Lucknow or Varanasi Graduates’.

Bihar: split verdict, Patna Graduates’ undecided

Of Bihar’s eight seats, india.com listed five as decided: BJP’s Narendra Prasad Singh in Tirhut Teachers’ (by 594 votes), RJD’s Dr Sanjeev Kumar in Patna Teachers’ (by 1,057), Jan Suraaj’s Suresh Prasad Rai in Darbhanga Teachers’, independent Rahul Raj in Saran Teachers’, and BJP’s Sarvesh Kumar in Darbhanga Graduates’ by just 237 votes.

The closely watched Patna Graduates’ seat was still being counted. JD(U)’s Neeraj Kumar was ahead in the latest reports, but India TV’s live blog had on Tuesday night carried an unofficial update showing him briefly trailing, and no winner has been formally declared. RJD’s Dilip Patel and Jan Suraaj’s Anuj Kumar Singh are his main rivals; The Week’s early tally placed Singh third. In Kosi Graduates’, BJP’s Dr N.K. Yadav led, while reports on Tirhut Graduates’ conflicted. Congress candidate Sanjay Yadav alleged that the Patna counting hall lacked CCTV cameras.

Maharashtra: Nagpur goes to second preferences

No winner had been officially confirmed in any of Maharashtra’s five seats by Wednesday morning. In the Nagpur Graduates’ (padvidhar) constituency, BJP’s Sudhakar Kohale had 60,924 votes after round two against sitting Congress MLC Abhijit Wanjari’s 56,630, ANI reported. Independent Nitesh Karale polled 24,249. With the quota at 75,438, the outcome will turn on second-preference transfers. The BJP held the seat for decades before Wanjari won it in 2020.

In Amravati Teachers’, Shiv Sena’s Kiran Sarnaik led by over 3,500 votes after 19 rounds, ahead of rebel Shrikant Deshpande and Congress’s Aditi Pohare, TV9 Marathi reported. India TV’s late-night trends showed the Mahayuti ahead in three seats and the opposition in two, though its earlier entries named different leaders.

Karnataka: all four to the NDA

The BJP-JD(S) alliance won all four seats, IANS reported. JD(S)’s A.P. Ranganath took Bengaluru Teachers’ by 908 votes over Congress’s Puttanna, reversing his 2024 by-poll loss. BJP’s Shashil G. Namoshi won North-East Teachers’ by 3,297 votes, crossing the quota on first preferences, ETV Bharat said. BJP’s S.V. Sankanur (West Graduates’) and K.M. Suresh (South-East Graduates’) won the other two. JD(S) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy called the result a mandate for the 2028 Assembly polls.

What next

Final declarations in UP, Bihar and Maharashtra are expected once second- and lower-preference rounds conclude. Margins in several seats are thin, so leads may still change.
