Over khichdi, Modi tells Haryana’s BJP MLAs to sell natural farming and rooftop solar to voters

All 48 BJP legislators met the Prime Minister at his residence. He asked them to push chemical-free farming, farmer producer groups and solar schemes, and to do social service beyond routine work.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted all 48 of Haryana’s BJP MLAs at his residence, 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, on Saturday, 3 October. Over a meal of khichdi, he gave them a list of causes to take to their constituencies.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, state BJP president Archana Gupta and Smriti Irani, the party’s in-charge for Haryana, were also present.

The four messages

  • Natural farming: Cut the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, which the PM linked to health concerns.
  • Cooperative farming: Set up farmer producer organisations (FPOs) to reduce input costs and stop farmland being broken up.
  • Solar power: Promote PM-KUSUM, which supports small solar units on farms, and PM Surya Ghar, the rooftop solar scheme for homes.
  • Social service: Serve constituents personally, beyond routine government work.

Excessive use of DAP and Urea fertilisers and pesticides was rendering our agricultural produce full of chemicals. — Archana Gupta, Haryana BJP president, describing the meeting

The PM wanted the MLAs to go beyond normal work and do some social service. — Vipul Goel, Haryana minister

Why it matters

Farmers have been wary of natural farming because of fears of lower yields. The Saini government has completed two years of its term, and the meeting signals that the BJP wants its MLAs focused on farm and energy schemes in the run-up to the 2029 elections.
