Manchester City beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield after Gravenberch red card
Haaland, Doku and Cherki scored after Ryan Gravenberch was sent off in the 62nd minute, keeping City’s perfect Premier League start intact.

Manchester City beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 at Anfield on Sunday, 11 October, scoring three times in the second half after Liverpool midfielder Ryan Gravenberch was sent off. The win kept City’s perfect start to the 2026-27 Premier League season intact.
Erling Haaland, Jeremy Doku and Rayan Cherki scored for the visitors, who are managed this season by Enzo Maresca. It was the first league defeat for Liverpool under their new manager, Andoni Iraola.
Red card turns the game
The first half ended goalless, with chances at both ends. NBC Sports reported that City goalkeeper Donnarumma saved from Gravenberch, Mac Allister curled wide and Kerkez cleared off his own line.
In the 62nd minute, referee Chris Kavanagh showed Gravenberch a second yellow card for a foul on Doku. Goal reported that Haaland scored three minutes later, and Doku added a second with a curling shot soon after. Cherki completed the scoring, finishing a move involving Elliot Anderson and Josko Gvardiol.
Reports differ slightly on how quickly the goals came: Football365 said City scored three times in 13 minutes after the red card, while NBC Sports described a spell of about 16 minutes. Neither outlet gave a minute for Cherki’s goal.

What the managers said
Iraola disputed the first booking. “I think the first foul of Ryan is never a yellow card, never,” he said, according to Goal. Speaking to BBC Sport, as reported by Football365, he added: “For 60 minutes, the players were very good.” He also said: “It’s a loss and we didn’t get anything from the performance but I liked it a lot.”
Maresca told Sky Sports, as reported by Football365, that it was a “very difficult environment”. “We struggled first half, we were on the ball but not so much off the ball,” he said, adding: “We need to learn how to deal with the noise.”
Context off the pitch
The win came less than two weeks after the Premier League announced on 29 September that an independent commission had found City guilty of serious breaches of its financial rules covering the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons, Al Jazeera reported. The sanction has not yet been decided. City deny wrongdoing and have said they will appeal.
Goal reported that Liverpool were without forwards Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo for the match.
