The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has set out how often members can take advances from their provident fund accounts. Business Today and Outlook Money reported the limits on 14 October. Separately, EPFO has given employers until 31 October to file returns and pay contributions for September 2026.

How often members can withdraw

On 13 October, EPFO posted a “Smart Guide on New Rules on EPF Advances” on its official X account. The guide groups partial withdrawals into three categories, and each category has its own frequency limit:

  • Illness (member and family): no numerical limit on the number of withdrawals.
  • Education (member and family): up to 10 times during EPF membership.
  • Marriage (member and family): up to five times during membership.
  • Housing: up to five times during membership. This covers buying a house or flat, construction, home loan repayment, and renovation or improvement of a home.
  • Special circumstances: such as natural calamities and other emergencies notified by the Central Board. Withdrawals are allowed up to twice in a financial year.

Business Today and Outlook Money both reported that eligible members can withdraw up to 75 per cent of their EPF balance after 12 months of membership. The balance includes the employee and employer shares with interest. Outlook Money described this as a uniform rule across the categories. Aaj Tak, which also reported on the guide, noted that it does not clearly explain how the 75 per cent limit works together with the frequency limits. None of the three reports gave an effective date or a circular number for the rules.

September ECR deadline moved to 31 October

Employers had until 15 October to file the electronic challan-cum-return (ECR) and pay contributions for the September 2026 wage month. That deadline is now 31 October, The Tribune reported on 13 October. Deccan Herald also reported the extension.

According to both reports, the relief follows a revision of the wage ceiling that took effect on 17 September 2026. The Tribune quoted a labour ministry official who said the revision required changes to payroll, pay bills and contribution calculations, “making it difficult for some employers to complete the filing and payment process within the original deadline.” Deccan Herald reported that employers had made representations on the issue.

The extension applies only to September 2026. The ministry said “it would not constitute a general extension of statutory deadlines for any other wage month,” The Tribune reported. The extension does not waive any other obligations under the EPF Act or its schemes.
