Free Fire India launch date: 28 October buzz grows, but Garena has confirmed nothing yet
A 28 October release date for Free Fire India is circulating widely, but Garena has made no announcement and the Play Store listing is not live.

Searches for the Free Fire India launch date have surged ahead of Wednesday, 28 October, a date that has spread widely on social media and gaming sites. As of Tuesday morning, however, Garena, the Singapore-based publisher of the battle royale game, has not announced any release date for the India-specific edition, and the game cannot yet be downloaded or pre-registered for in a way that confirms an imminent launch.
Where the 28 October date comes from
The 28 October date traces back to content creators linked to Garena, who reportedly mentioned it in connection with a promotional shoot, according to a 27 October explainer on iTechGuides that also cites reporting by Mint. That explainer stresses that a creator’s remark is not a developer announcement. Sportsdunia, in a 26 October report, also described the date as coming from industry reports and leaks, and said Garena had made no official statement.
The 28 October date is not the first to circulate. Earlier claimed dates, including 22 October 2025 and 15 August 2026, came and went without a launch, NewsZest noted in mid-October.
What is actually confirmed
A small number of points can be checked independently.
- A Google Play listing for the India edition exists under the developer name Garena International III, and it has been updated in recent weeks. iTechGuides reported that the listing showed no install or pre-registration button when it checked, and no iOS listing was publicly visible.
- Garena’s Free Fire MAX social media handles in India have been renamed to “Free Fire India Official” and “Free Fire India Esports”, according to Sportsdunia.
- No pre-registration rewards have been officially announced.
Sportsdunia also reported a leaked esports roadmap, including a rebranded national tournament and a larger prize pool. That plan has not been confirmed by Garena and should be treated as unverified.
Background: the 2022 ban and a stalled comeback
Free Fire was among a batch of apps blocked by the Indian government in February 2022 over security concerns. The block was made under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, NewsZest reported. Garena and its parent company, Sea Ltd, said on 14 February 2022 that the game was no longer available on Indian app stores. Before the ban, Free Fire had been one of the most downloaded mobile games in India and had more than 40 million users in the country, TechCrunch reported. Free Fire MAX, a separate higher-specification version of the game, has stayed available.
In August 2023 Garena announced a localised Free Fire India and set a 5 September 2023 release. It postponed the launch a day before, saying it needed more time to finish localisation, The Quint reported at the time. Garena had said Indian users’ data would be stored locally through a partnership with Yotta, a data-centre firm backed by the Hiranandani group, and it had signed cricketer M S Dhoni as brand ambassador, according to TechCrunch. No new date has been set since then. In the meantime, many players have moved to Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India.
What players should watch for
A launch can be considered real only when Garena confirms it on its verified social accounts or official website, or when the Play Store listing goes live for download. Several outlets have also warned players against unofficial APK files claiming to be Free Fire India, which can carry security risks. If Garena makes an announcement on or around 28 October, it would be the first firm schedule since the 2023 postponement. Until then, the date remains a rumour.
