The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has published a circular setting out how marks will be divided between theory, practicals, projects and internal assessment in every subject for the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations of the 2026-27 session.

Class 10: For most core subjects, including Hindi A and B, English Language and Literature, Mathematics (Basic and Standard), Science and Social Science, the 100 marks are split into 80 for the written paper and 20 for internal assessment. Some subjects differ: Home Science is 70 theory and 30 practical, while Computer Applications is split evenly at 50:50. Skill subjects such as Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science have their own theory and practical components. Most theory papers last three hours, though some vocational and computer subjects have two-hour papers.

Class 12: Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science generally carry 70 marks for theory and 30 for practicals. Mathematics, Economics, History, Political Science, Business Studies and Accountancy mostly follow an 80:20 pattern, with the 20 marks going to project work or internal assessment. Vocational subjects vary: Retail, Information Technology and Web Application are 60:40, and Multimedia is 50:50.

The document also covers the length of each theory paper, when external examiners are needed for practicals and the supply of practical answer books.
