Microsoft AI Researcher John Langford Quits, Says AI Frontiers Group Is Over

Langford says moving his roughly 50-person research group into Microsoft AI in September shifted the focus to scaling, leaving no room for new research.

John Langford, the researcher who led Microsoft’s AI Frontiers group, has left the company and says the group itself has effectively come to an end.

Langford explained his decision in a post on his long-running blog, Machine Learning (Theory), and shared it on X on 6 November, describing the situation as something of a “train wreck”.

AI Frontiers was set up inside Microsoft Research in 2023, after the launch of ChatGPT. The team of about 50 people worked on projects such as AutoGen, a framework for coordinating AI agents, and Fara.

In September the group was moved out of Microsoft Research and into Microsoft AI. According to Langford, leadership there treats scaling, making models bigger and refining existing methods, as the priority over new research. He said he understands the business logic of scaling but disagrees with treating it as a rival to research, arguing that the returns from research are real and significant.

He also said there was no clear path for his team’s ideas to be put to real use inside Microsoft AI, and questioned whether Microsoft Research still rewards good work the way it once did.

His exit follows the recent departures of other senior Microsoft leaders, including Sarah Bond and Eric Boyd, which has prompted questions about the direction of the company’s AI efforts.
