A 4.9-magnitude earthquake in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli sends tremors through Delhi-NCR
A shallow 4.9-magnitude earthquake centred in Chamoli, Uttarakhand, shook Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad on Tuesday night. No casualties were reported.

An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 struck Chamoli district in Uttarakhand at 10:23 pm on Tuesday, 6 October, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). Tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR, including Noida and Ghaziabad, and in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh.
What we know
- Magnitude: 4.9 according to the NCS. The US Geological Survey and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre put it at 5.1.
- Epicentre: Chamoli district, about 50 km south of Joshimath (latitude 30.103 N, longitude 79.561 E).
- Depth: 13 km, which is shallow. Shallow quakes tend to be felt over a wider area.
- Damage: no casualties or significant damage had been reported by Tuesday night.
Second quake in a day
Earlier on Tuesday, a separate 4.5-magnitude earthquake hit Nagaon district in Assam. Uttarakhand has also recorded smaller quakes in Bageshwar and Uttarkashi districts in recent months.
Why it matters
Uttarakhand sits in the Himalayan belt, one of India’s most seismically active regions, and tremors from quakes there are regularly felt in the plains, including Delhi. The NCS publishes earthquake details on its BhooKamp app.
