Gurkirat’s 90th-minute header earns Punjab FC 1-1 draw against Mumbai City
Substitute Gurkirat Singh headed in a late equaliser against his former club to cancel out Leandro Otormin's penalty as Punjab FC drew 1-1 with Mumbai City in Delhi.

Substitute Gurkirat Singh came back to haunt his old club on Monday, 19 October, heading in a 90th-minute equaliser that earned Punjab FC a 1-1 draw against Mumbai City FC in the Indian Super League 2026-27 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
Mumbai City had gone in front in the 63rd minute through a penalty from Uruguayan striker Leandro Otormin, and looked set to take all three points until the late twist. The goal was Gurkirat’s first for Punjab, according to Sportstar and the Hindustan Times.
A physical, chance-starved first half
The hosts set the tone with aggressive pressing, and the contest quickly turned physical. Rishikanta Meitei forced the first save in the fourth minute, a long-range shot that Mumbai goalkeeper TP Rehenesh kept out; Khel Now put the distance at about 35 yards.
Mumbai City lost winger Vikram Partap Singh early after a challenge involving Meitei, with Farukh Chaudhary taking his place. Brandon Fernandes then tested Punjab keeper Arshdeep Singh, who came off his line smartly to block. Punjab replaced Meitei with Bishu Singh in the 36th minute and came closest to scoring in stoppage time before the interval, when Khaiminthang Lhungdim’s left-footed strike from range struck the angle of post and bar.
Penalty, then a late header
The Islanders began the second half brightly, and Farukh failed to make clean contact with a header from Valpuia’s cross. Punjab sent on Gurkirat for Vishal Yadav ten minutes after the restart.
The deadlock broke soon after the hour, when Bijoy Varghese stood on PN Noufal’s ankle inside the area. Otormin drilled the spot-kick past Arshdeep. Mumbai coach Manolo Marquez then made a double switch, bringing on Tluanga and Wilmar Jordan for Brandon and the goalscorer, and Punjab answered by introducing Sanathoi Meitei and Arshvir Singh in place of Muhammad Suhail and Diego Raposo. Khel Now reported that Arshdeep also kept out an effort from Akash Mishra.
The Punjab changes made the difference. Sanathoi curled in an accurate cross from the left and Gurkirat, left unmarked, rose to nod it home.
What it means for the table
The fixture closed the second round of matches. Khel Now reported that the point moved Punjab FC up to third place, behind leaders NorthEast United FC, who have won both their games, and second-placed Bengaluru FC on six points. Mumbai City were listed ninth. Punjab striker Raphael Messi Bouli is among four players tied at the top of the scoring chart with two goals each, the outlet added.
