La Liga: Barcelona beat Getafe 3-0, ten-man Real Madrid edge Villarreal 1-0

Gordon, Jesus and Kounde scored as Barcelona won 3-0 to stay perfect; Diomande's goal gave ten-man Real Madrid a 1-0 win over Villarreal.

Barcelona kept their perfect La Liga start intact on Saturday, 10 October, beating Getafe 3-0, while Real Madrid edged Villarreal 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu despite finishing with ten men.

Barcelona 3-0 Getafe

Anthony Gordon opened the scoring after 78 seconds with a low shot under goalkeeper David Soria, his first Barcelona goal, according to beIN SPORTS. TNT Sports’ live commentary also put the goal in the second minute.

  • 30′: Gabriel Jesus, bottom-left finish after Getafe’s Zaid Romero was caught on the ball in his own box.
  • 73′: Jules Kounde, who got in behind from a short corner routine, with Lamine Yamal delivering from the right.

Soria made several saves, including one from Kounde just before half-time. beIN SPORTS reported that Barcelona have now won all eight of their La Liga games, scoring 34 goals, and that eight straight wins equals the best start in the league, matching Gerardo Martino’s 2013-14 side. It added that Gordon’s goal was the earliest by an English player in La Liga this century.

Real Madrid 1-0 Villarreal

The match was goalless at half-time. Yan Diomande scored the only goal after Federico Valverde’s pass, in the 62nd minute according to 101 Great Goals and Noticias Caracol; Fox Sports’ match log lists it at 63′.

Vinicius Junior, who came on as a substitute, had a goal disallowed after a VAR review. Noticias Caracol reported that it was ruled out for pulling an opponent’s hair at the start of the move, and Fox Sports lists his red card at 72′. Real Madrid played the closing stages with ten men.

Kylian Mbappe hit the post early on and was denied by Villarreal goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi, and Thibaut Courtois made several saves for Madrid, according to the match reports. Fox Sports recorded five yellow cards for Madrid and two for Villarreal.

What it means for the table

Barcelona lead with 24 points from eight games. Noticias Caracol’s table after the round shows Atletico Madrid second on 19 points and Real Madrid third on 18 from eight games, with Villarreal tenth and Getafe 13th, both on 8 points.

Sources differ on Madrid’s tally. 101 Great Goals lists Madrid fourth on 15 points from seven matches, Barcelona first on 24 and Atletico second on 19. Noticias Caracol described Madrid as six points behind Barcelona, which matches its own 18-point figure.
