Real Madrid kept their Champions League campaign spotless with a 4-1 win over RB Leipzig at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night (early Thursday, IST), making it three wins from three in the league phase.

Bernardo Silva, Arda Güler, Kylian Mbappé and Yan Diomande were on target for Madrid, while Tidiam Gomis scored Leipzig’s late consolation. The same evening, Arsenal fought back for a 2-2 draw at Bayern Munich and Manchester United were routed 4-1 by Como in Italy.

Courtois keeps Madrid level, then the floodgates open

Leipzig had the better of the early openings. Thibaut Courtois made a sharp stop to keep out Rômulo Cardoso around the half-hour mark and later denied Christopher Nkunku when he was through on goal. At the other end, Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt pushed away a Vinícius Júnior effort.

The breakthrough came just before the interval. Vandevoordt blocked a shot from Güler, but Bernardo Silva followed up to score his first goal for the club on 43 minutes.

Seven minutes into the second half, Güler doubled the lead, tapping in from close range after Mbappé nodded the ball across goal from a Jude Bellingham cross.

Mbappé then added the third on 83 minutes, bending a shot into the top corner from the edge of the area after a pass from Diomande. Leipzig pulled one back two minutes later when Gomis converted Christoph Baumgartner’s assist, but Diomande had the final say on 87 minutes with a superb volley into the top corner. The forward, who moved to Madrid from Leipzig, scored against his former club.

According to Yahoo Sports, the result extends Madrid’s winning run to four games in all competitions, and Mbappé now has 12 goals in 12 matches this season. Leipzig, who beat PSV last week, stay on three points and have now gone eight Champions League away games without a win. Madrid’s attention now shifts to the Clásico.

Elsewhere in the Champions League

Bayern Munich 2-2 Arsenal: Arsenal’s night in Munich began badly when Bukayo Saka limped off with an apparent thigh problem after about 10 minutes. His replacement, Eberechi Eze, gave the visitors the lead on 25 minutes from a Martin Ødegaard pass, a goal that stood after a tight offside check. Alphonso Davies equalised on 35 minutes from a Harry Kane through-ball, and Kane put Bayern ahead from the spot around the hour after the ball struck Jurrien Timber’s hand. Declan Rice rescued a point for Arsenal after a one-two with substitute Viktor Gyökeres.

Como 4-1 Manchester United: It was a chastening evening for Michael Carrick’s side at the Stadio Sinigaglia. Nico Paz scored inside two minutes and again in the 57th, with Tasos Douvikas (49′) and Jacobo Ramón (76′) also on the scoresheet. Joshua Zirkzee’s stoppage-time goal, set up by Amad Diallo, was only a consolation. Carrick made a double change at half-time, taking off Matheus Cunha and Andrey Santos, as the pressure on him grew.

Other results: Lille 2-4 Galatasaray, Aston Villa 3-1 Viking, Club Brugge 3-0 Lens, Inter Milan 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk, Real Betis 1-0 Feyenoord and Sporting Lisbon 2-3 LASK Linz, according to NBC Sports.

Sources gave slightly different descriptions of Güler’s goal: the club’s report credited a Bellingham cross that Mbappé headed on, while others recorded Mbappé as the assist provider.
