West Indies chased down 250 to beat India by six wickets in the second T20 International in Ranchi on Friday, 9 October, with captain Shai Hope hitting an unbeaten century off 45 balls. The result levels the five-match series at 1-1 after India won the opening game in Lucknow.

West Indies finished on 252 for 4 in 18.3 overs, with nine balls to spare, at the JSCA International Stadium Complex.

India post 249 after being sent in

Mayank Yadav strikes early, then Hope and Rutherford take over

The chase started badly for the visitors. Fast bowler Mayank Yadav removed Kamil Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer off consecutive balls in the first over, leaving West Indies on 5 for 2, The Statesman reported. He later bowled Rovman Powell, who made 24 off 13 balls, in the sixth over to end a 49-run stand with Hope and leave the score at 58 for 3.

From there, Hope and Sherfane Rutherford turned the game. Rutherford struck 84 off 37 balls before he was dismissed, and Romario Shepherd then joined Hope to finish the job.

  • Shai Hope: 102 not out off 45 balls
  • Sherfane Rutherford: 84 off 37 balls
  • Romario Shepherd: 34 not out off 13 balls
  • Mayank Yadav: 3 for 36 in three overs
  • Kuldeep Yadav: 1 for 53 in four overs
  • Axar Patel: 63 runs conceded in 3.3 overs

A record chase

According to ANI, it was West Indies’ highest successful run chase in T20 Internationals and the second-highest successful chase in the format’s history, behind South Africa’s 259 against West Indies at Centurion in 2023.

What Iyer said

India captain Shreyas Iyer pointed to the dew and the pitch after the match, ANI reported.

When the dew factor comes in, it plays a massive role. The margin of error on this wicket was very minor. But credit where due, they batted very well.

Iyer also praised Mayank and Samson, saying “both were phenomenal”, and said the three early wickets had “stabilised things” for India.

The series now moves on with three matches left and the teams level.
