Even as the remnants of Cyclone Arnab weaken, IMD warns of thunderstorms and heavy rain in parts of Odisha, with the new system heading towards the Andhra coast.

Barely days after Cyclone Arnab, a new weather system is brewing in the Bay of Bengal. According to a bulletin from the India Meteorological Department’s regional centre in Bhubaneswar issued on Friday, a fresh low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea is likely to strengthen into a depression by Saturday, 31 October.

The system is expected to move west-northwest across the southeast Bay of Bengal and approach the Andhra Pradesh coast in about two days. Meanwhile, what is left of Cyclone Arnab has weakened into a well-marked low over north Chhattisgarh and neighbouring northwest Odisha.

District-wise alerts in Odisha

A yellow warning is in force until Saturday morning for Sundargarh, Jharsuguda and Sambalpur, where isolated thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph, touching 50 kmph, are likely. No severe weather is expected in the state on 1 November.

From 1 November into 2 November, heavy rain is likely in Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Gajapati and Ganjam. Malkangiri has been placed under an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places until the morning of 3 November.

District administrations in southern Odisha have been told to stay ready for emergencies, and officials are watching swollen rivers such as the Harabhangi in Gajapati.

Why it matters

October and November form the peak post-monsoon cyclone season in the Bay of Bengal. Residents of coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, especially fishermen, are advised to follow official IMD bulletins and local administration advisories over the next few days. “Aaj ka mausam” and “kal ka mausam” were among the most searched terms in India on Friday morning.
