Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, whose stylised crime dramas such as Kaante and Shootout at Wadala left a mark on Hindi cinema in the 2000s and 2010s, has died in Mumbai. He was in his late fifties.

According to reports, Gupta suffered a severe head injury in an accidental fall at his residence on Friday, 30 October. The Versova police have registered an accidental death report and, as per The Week, no foul play is suspected.

A career built on crime thrillers

Gupta made his directorial debut with Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994) and went on to form a long partnership with Sanjay Dutt across films including Kaante (2002), Musafir (2004) and Zinda (2006). Under his banner White Feather Films he produced Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007) and later directed its prequel, Shootout at Wadala (2013).

His other credits include Jazbaa (2015), Kaabil (2017) and Mumbai Saga (2021). The Miranda Brothers (2024) has been described as his final film.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said he was stunned, having met Gupta only days earlier at a religious gathering at his home.
