How it is observed

Families worship Lakshmi, Ganesha and Kubera in the evening, and Lord Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, is honoured for good health. After sunset a lamp, the Yama Deepam, is lit outside the main door facing south.

What people buy

Buying something new in metal, such as utensils, silver or gold, is a long-standing custom, done within one’s budget as a way of welcoming Lakshmi. Fasting is optional, and anyone with health concerns should check with a doctor first.
