8th Pay Commission: DA Could Touch 67% from January 2027 Before New Pay Panel Reports

Inflation data suggest a hike of at least four percentage points for central government employees and pensioners, possibly the last under the 7th Pay Commission.

Central government employees and pensioners may see their Dearness Allowance climb to around 67% from 1 January 2027, if current inflation trends hold. That would be at least four percentage points above the present rate, and could be the final DA revision under the 7th Pay Commission structure before the 8th Central Pay Commission’s recommendations arrive.

Where DA stands now

DA is currently 63% of basic pay, after a three-point hike that took effect on 1 July 2026. DA is worked out from the 12-month average of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW).

The index stood at 148.6 in January 2026 and had risen to 154.4 by August, the latest published reading. If it stays at that level until December, the 12-month average works out to about 152, which translates into DA of roughly 67.46%. Since the government normally rounds the figure down, a hike of at least four points to 67% is being projected. A further rise in prices in the remaining months could push it higher; a dip could pull it lower.

8th Pay Commission timeline

The 8th Central Pay Commission was notified in November 2025 with an 18-month mandate that runs till May 2027, so its report is expected around May or June next year. When a new pay structure is introduced, accumulated DA is usually merged into basic pay and the allowance starts again from zero.

What staff unions want

Employee bodies have made several demands before the commission. The Federation of National Postal Organisations has asked for DA to be calculated point-to-point without rounding off, and for DA to be merged with basic pay once it crosses 25%. The Bharat Pensioners Samaj has suggested revising DA and Dearness Relief every quarter based on a three-month average.

The final DA figure for January 2027 will depend on the AICPI-IW data for September to December and the government’s formal announcement, which usually comes a few months after the effective date.
